VERMILION, OHIO
Quit Wishing and Come Fishing on Lake Erie for Walleye and Perch!
Captain Larry Woods is a true professional. I've never fished with a Captain who worked harder to keep us on fish. Constantly checking lines, changing lures, helping with the beginners and young kids aboard. Just a pleasure to spend the day on the water and watch this man practice his craft. So much so, that I felt compelled to create this page for Larry here on my site and try to encourage all of you in need of charter services to give the Captain a call. You sure won't regret it.

CAPTAIN'S LOG
The Captain is an active member of several fishing forums and is always trying to help others as you will see from the excerpts below. I'll try to get the Captain to provide at least weekly reports to post here for those of you that might not want to become members of other forums, but would still like to keep up with the bite in the Vermilion area. Thanks in advance to the Captain!

Sorry that I have not kept up with Larry's reports up this year. The Skipper has been doing great all season and I've had the pleasure of going out with him several times this year. Last trip out, 7/22/07 found Larry, Max and myself on a lure testing adventure. Many new patterns were presented to the Walleye and they seemed to favor them very well. Throughout the season, Larry has been running new offerings and proving them up for us. Listerine, Sour Grapes, and Toothless Blind Date have shown themselves to be top producers. Larry suggested some modifications to existing spoons and we are in the process of testing those now. Our best of the last batch proved to be the Van Go's, Rippin Lip and anything we had painted with Orange on them. So far so good and many to be named. Will try to update this more frequently, but for the most part, all anyone needs to know is there are plenty of Walleye to be had out straight out of the Vermilion River and 40 foot of water has produced consistently all season. Perch are also starting to fire up in 38 foot of water and it was very tempting to give up on lure testing and bag some Jumbo's. There's always next time!

Big Kev,
Went out tonight, by myself, east of the park in 20- 25 fow to kill a
few hours trying-out some new Ole Petes. Took 7 walleye in 30 minutes.
Was really disappointed, I only got to run three lures and one caught
all the fish. would have been done in 25 minutes, but lost one trying to
net it in the prop wash. Did not catch one junk fish. Used dipsys 1 1/2
back 40 which caught all the fish and the 3 back 55.
Fish are seriously stacked up. Ole Pete I need 6 more Money lures
ASAP. BadBoy. 7/28/06
West of Vermilion was the place. South of the pack off the Castle was the key for us today. Didn't get out till after 8:00 with a late arriving crew, but First Mate R J had us netting fish from 8:30 to 12:30 when #48 decided to enter our cooler. Our total weight was just under 90#, no "big" fish to speak of today, but our crew was a bunch of happy campers anyhow.
Program was pretty much the same, just had to shorten things up a bit for the shallower (20' to 30') water. To the guys calling me on 79, I am not ignoring you, things have been so busy in the back of the boat, I'm spending most of my time in the back, if you need me or a report call me on the cell. Hope everyone else had a good day! BadBoy. 7/23/06
Fished 41 fow off Huron and
pulled trolling limits both days before 11:00. Charter boat drift
fishing same area with me Saturday pulled full boat limit of walleye by
10:00. Less junk fish on the meat I guess. If you fish that area,
be ready for ALOT of junk. We lost alot of time pulling 4" to 6" white
bass. It took two off us to work the back of the boat to keep some lines
in the water. 2 to 4 fish on at a time most of the morning. Thank God
for autopilot! The walleye ran a bit bigger then the ones in the
school off of Vermilion. A good sign for the next few years is the
number of 10" to 12" spikes we pulled both days!
Program we used was the same, #3 Dipsys back 88 ft. 1 1/2 back 75, 40
jets back 115 to 130 ft. Colors ranged from dark like Ole Pete's Raven
and Kevorkian in the early morning to lighter colors like monkey shine,
green puke and snatch-it after 9:00.
Saturday we change to Perch after getting our eyes and we found a
surprisingly good bite at the 1st marker buoy east of the wall. It was
not "up and down" but it was a steady pick. The two guys from
Lexington, Kentucky who took me up on my walk on offer ended up taking
home about 100 lbs. (live weight) of Walleye and Perch, not a bad day
for them. My other two fisherman for the day, a father son team
from Elyria gave us all a lesson on how to pull in the perch with the
youngster also catching the big Walleye of the day. Thanks again, Scott
and Kevin for your generous donation, that was very sportsman of you to
donate your fish to our out of area guests for their eating pleasure.

Dave,
Team Bad Boy is in with two two man teams and I will take a third two
person team if someone needs a ride at NO CHARGE. I will also provide
all bait and tackle for the day. Contact Dave or Charlie thru the
shop or post here to apply for the two spots. Prefer non-boat owning
pair like parent/child or two siblings over two guys who have their own
ride. Each team on board the Bad Boy will choose own
lures, (ripsticks, spoons or harnesses) and have four marked rods per
team that will cycle thru the mix of boards, dipsys (each team cycles
thru dipsys #3, #2 and maybe #1 at 30 min. intervals) or flat lines. We
will drift only if lake forces us too. Oh, I almost forgot.
Big Kev -- How about either a four man perch charter up against a full
boat wash and wax job between you and I or a six man perch trip or 4 man
walleye trip -vs.- the boat detail along with a car detailing for my
partner and each member of the other two teams on board my boat that
finish ahead of your team? BadBoy

Mark, Mine go in a refrigerator stored in a Styrofoam worm box with "Oberlin Canteen" worm bedding. They will hold for the 1 to 2 weeks, but you have to check them and pull out any weak or dead looking worms so you don't lose the whole lot. Good Luck! BadBoy. 7/4/06
I have 2 party group looking to
share a charter on July 15th. Here's a chance for someone to save some
money and enjoy a day on the lake.
Give me a call at 440-320-6908 or drop me a line at
BadBoyCharters@aol.com for more information. 6/30/06
The hot area today was the 30/17.5 Captains I checked in with pulled them trolling, on jets and off Dipsys. Colors are the same as all week, rays raspberry dolphin, confusion, Craig's Christmas, and one guy told me that a orange stripe silver spoon pulled 8 of his 12 fish. I read one report Thursday that the walleye were coming on the crawler harnesses, anyone been trying the worms? BadBoy. 6/30/06
As Double Eagle put it in his post, today was a up hill and a down hill battle. Waves were anywhere from 2' to 5' except for a very brief pause of the wind when it laid down for a short period of time. Amish drifters did good out in the 31/17 area. I heard one boat got 32. We worked our butt off washing all the lures and netting 18 nice fish. Dipsy and when we could run the jets both pulled fish. I didn't try any worms, but I bet I will tomorrow. Thanks for the report Double Eagle and Dave - - - keep your fingers off my green tape and you know you're not allowed to play with the scissors! Good fishing all and stay safe! BadBoy. 6/29/06
Ditto on what the other guy's
have said. If you bed your own worms I like to use the old Oberlin
Sphagnum Moss. Keeps them healthier and it's alot cleaner. If I buy
worms that are bedded in dirt I wash them clean at the dock and use a
cooler like Max does to keep the boat cleaner.
BadBoy. 6/28/06
Fished the 31/16.5 area and pulled 22 nice walleye before the group pulled the plug. Fish came on the same dipsy and jet program we have been using. Ole Pete's lures becoming a hot favorite with the mates, Kevorkian in the early morning before we lighten up to your Orange Glitter with some custom green tape we added. Both are sweet and produce some very nice fish. Good Fishing All! BadBoy. 6/28/06
Fished the 31/ 16 area in 50 FOW. Pulled our 24 nice Walleye by 11:00. Dipsys and jets both produced on 100 set backs. Color of the day was Confusion. Speed was 1.7 to 2. The fish in this school are not as chunky as we have been getting, but we heard reports of a few Fish O's being taken. A special thanks to the to that special fisherman/boater who followed me out of the harbor, ran for about four miles 100' behind me and then when he could see the pack of boats ahead, passed me within 15' of my boat doing 25 to 30 miles per hour. HERE'S YOUR SIGN and a another hand salute for you. (mm!m) To everyone else good fishing and be safe. BadBoy. 6/25/06
Fished Saturday and Sunday in the 29/16 area pulling dipsys and jets, colors were anything with a hint of orange, small and big spoons both worked. set backs were 100 on the jets, 80 on the #3 and 70 on the 1 1/2, speed was around 2 and the catching was Fantastic. Seven man limit on Saturday with big fish being 29 1/2" 8 lbs. Big fish was caught by "Dad" on a fathers day trip. Five man limit on Sunday of bigger fish with a pair of 27" as big fish. BadBoy. 6/18/06
Max, I had offered you docking lessons, but rumor has it, it's not in the river you need a little help. Here are some pics from Saturday and Sunday of what they look like:
I know the question wasn't
directed at me but I'll throw in my two cents. I do take minnows along
for the good bite days and try to double up on the walleye and perch.
But, a piece of belly meat works pretty good in a good perch bite. I
always use the belly meat for my young fisherman so they don't get
robbed as often without feeling the bite. BadBoy. 6/12/06
The weekend walleye bite was
AWESOME! We were 7 short of our limit Saturday, pulling 29 very nice fish
and sent home a very happy crew from Akron. Fish came at D buoy off off
spoons run back 50 feet off the big boards. Hot colors were anything
with orange.
Sunday we moved over to 42' of water off of Beaver and pulled our two
man limit in about 2 hours. Fish came off the dipsys on a 3 setting 80
back and 50 back on the jets. Colors were anything with orange.
Hopefully the fish will hang in with us for awhile. 6/11/06
